The focus on risk deals with the more structural aspects of reflexivity (Lash, 1994: 116). By this is meant those processes and events within society that bring about a wider discussion of the character of the society which produced those events (the food scares, the pollution) and the kinds of interventions that might reduce the incidence of such events or modify their impact.
Another associated problem is that the New Home Economics models take the domestic division of labour as a starting point, rather than as something requiring explanation. It is 'given' by an economic logic of differential earnings of women and men. However, if such differentials can be explained (at least in part) by women's and men's differing relations to childrearing and the family, then the economic logic is predicated on social processes. Changed earnings differentials may be as much a consequence as a cause of change in domestic divisions of labour.
It is perhaps that our modes of understanding family living have come closer to the realities of everyday experience and perception than some of the earlier models of functionalists or marxists. The second qualification is that, as the above quotation suggests, there are always alternative versions as to what is going on and what should be going on. Beck refers to the trends of counter-modernization which seek to assert or solidify societal boundaries in the face of reflexive modernization which seeks to abolish them (Beck, 1997a: 62).
