Another associated problem is that the New Home Economics models take the domestic division of labour as a starting point, rather than as something requiring explanation. It is 'given' by an economic logic of differential earnings of women and men. However, if such differentials can be explained (at least in part) by women's and men's differing relations to childrearing and the family, then the economic logic is predicated on social processes. Changed earnings differentials may be as much a consequence as a cause of change in domestic divisions of labour.

It is perhaps that our modes of understanding family living have come closer to the realities of everyday experience and perception than some of the earlier models of functionalists or marxists. The second qualification is that, as the above quotation suggests, there are always alternative versions as to what is going on and what should be going on.
