Psychological models reflect and perpetuate certain ways of looking at the world, specific theories of lesbian and gay oppression. These are (almost by definition) profoundly individualistic, privatized, and depoli ticized theories. As I showed in my first book, The Social Construction of Lesbianism (Kitzinger, 1987), academic psychology, through its rhetorical use of "objectivity," promotes liberal humanistic models of homosexuality that are fundamentally at variance with radical lesbian feminist theories.
However, profound problems beset Penn State... An openly gay faculty member, for example, finds death threats under his office door. A lesbian professor has epithets hurled at her on the street. A young man who someone says "acts gay" awakens in the early morning hours to find that his room has been set on fire by a homophobic student. All but a small cadre of lesbian and gay faculty fear letting their colleagues know about their sexual orientation because they assume that they will be denied promotion and tenure, or will be marginalized in their colleges.
