Thanks for getting here before me,” Darby said. Faraway Filly E 41 When the woman grinned and held her hand up for a high five, Darby returned it. “So, I’m still stuck with a filthy horse,” Richard said with a sigh after the woman had left. “For now,” Darby said, “but she’s a sweet mare—” “Except for biting and kicking,” he said. “She didn’t even defend herself,” Darby said. ” Richard’s expression said he wasn’t angry, he just felt powerless to correct this problem. ” Richard asked. If she’d sprinted away from the corral and left some other guy to help the horse, Darby wouldn’t have felt so confident, but Cade was there.

And caught the man looking back at her. Darby jerked her gaze away and aimed her eyes straight ahead until the stable was right in front of them. Three glossy horses, tied to a long hitching rail, dozed in the sun. All three had tails docked straight across the bottoms. Probably right where their tailbones ended, Darby speculated. Their gleaming necks were bare because their manes were shaved into little Mohawks. “Low-maintenance grooming,” Cade said. Darby weighed convenience against beauty for a second.

He fiddled with the handle. From here it was impossible to tell what he was really doing, but Darby had a feeling it wasn’t much. And he was trying to cover up by acting too dumb for sabotage. “I don’t know, sir. ” he said, shaking his head. He wasn’t from here, he was from Nevada, the trainer muttered. ” Nevada? The word gave Darby chills, but she didn’t have time to wonder why. A waitress leaned out of the restaurant and called, “Pauli, your break’s over. ” But the kid, Pauli, didn’t stop. “Nev-AH-da,” he mused.
