It took Carlos a little longer to finish college than other students in his class, but he did it and feels great. Is college in your future? Do you think you’ll continue your education even though school can be difficult for you? “You have to know yourself. But I don’t learn easily in a classroom. It’s hard for me to understand the concepts just by reading a book.

I wanted to be tested right away, since maybe this was the answer to my problems. Right before I was tested, I went to a youth meeting at an Orton Dyslexia Society conference. ” I walked in, looked around, and everyone looked like me. The students were just like me—smart kids who had the same problems. I can’t tell you how amazingly excited I was. When I was tested and diagnosed with LD, it was the biggest self-esteem boost. This knowledge changed everything and helped to take away some of the frustration.

That’s easier for me than writing papers in class for a teacher. Today, I’ve written over 30 books that have been translated into well over a dozen languages. But writing is still frustrating. The truth is, I’m not a very good writer. But I’ve made myself into a good rewriter! My first drafts are dreadful, but I can rework them. Computers are helpful because they make rewriting easier. As a professor at the University of Massachusetts, I tell my students that everything has to be rewritten. For me, there is a minimum of four drafts of anything I write.
