These disturbing, unrelentingly dismal conclusions about women's views of men thrust the question of methodology to the forefront of the debate. Did the conclusions apply to American women in general, as Hite asserted? Or did they apply only to the biased amalgamation of discontented women who Page 17 chose to answer the questionnaires and mail them in to "Hite Research," in New York, as her critics argued? One man who read her book had no doubts about the answer to that question. And he set in motion a chain, of events that would ultimately lead to Hite's self-exile.
She emphasizes in all three of her books that she wanted the women and men to be able to express in their own words what their sexual experiences were and how they felt about them. Further, for all three books, Hite mailed out multiple versions of the questionnaire, modifying some of the questions from one version to the next, and adding other questions. " Hite's decision to update her questionnaire during the conduct of the study, and to encourage respondents to skip around and answer only the questions that appealed to them, would have posed a serious methodological problem for the quantitative researcher.
