Even though Finnish culture has changed rapidly during recent decades, Finns still appreciate silence (Lehtonen and Sajavaara, 1985). Finns traditionally have a lot of patience regarding uncertainty and do not worry about silence. They enjoy it and do not have the same need for contentious and intensive social encounters that people may have, for example, in the United States (Carbaugh, 1995). It is often culturally and socially inappropriate to break the silence, which is also evident in a general presumption against small talk.
