Pervasive obsession with static identities and queer theory’s historic preoccupation with their annihilation are both equally problematic dispositions; part of the solution to the quandary must lie somewhere within the two possibilities and perhaps outside of them. A more carefully constructed practice of experimentation occurs in the sciences. It includes such general components as a field of inquiry with a background of theory and history, a scientific community with standards for data, objectivity, and, more specifically, evidentially supported inferences about hypotheses, based on controlled and replicable experiments that result in new knowledge or modification of accepted knowledge.
