Natasha, a merchant’s daughter, has run away from home and is missing. On the third night she comes running home, so out of breath that she cannot even hear the questions being asked by her parents or her maid. She is so shaken that she cannot speak about what had frightened her.

Gerard Wozek’s poem ‘‘Song to Myself at Seventeen’’ examines the situation of a young man who feels alienated because of his sexual orientation and of the grown poet trying to understand the nature of that experience. The poem is included in Bend, Don’t Shatter: Poets on the Beginning of Desire, a collection edited by T. Cole Rachel and Rita D. Costello and published in 2004 by Soft Skull Press.
