The southern African climate, in terms of conditions for biota, is moderate, and rich in species. This has been the case for millennia, with southern Africa only experiencing, at coldest, Pleistocene periglacial conditions at high elevations. Not that the climate has always been the same. The southern Cape was 5-6°C cooler 17-21 thousand years ago, while 5-8 thousand years ago it was slightly warmer than today.
