When this measure met with only limited success, they attempted to make treaties with African kings to stop the slave trade. In 1884-1893, the former Eastern Region of Nigeria was a Protectorate of Britain; it was joined with the Western Region and the Protec- Page 25 torate of Northern Nigeria on January 1, 1900, to form the Southern Nigerian Protectorate. On January 1, 1914, the two protectorates and the colony of Lagos were merged to form the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria.
