We called to get a helicopter in there, and I was surprised that the response was immediately in the affirmative. I was expecting that he would be escorted in, and was somewhat surprised to see that he was alone. The problem now was how to put the helicopter on the right spot, since it was difficult to pick out detailed ground features because of the darkness.
As I headed home, I was resigned to the fact that I was going to have to ditch, and was preparing myself, both mentally and physically, for that event. I tightened my shoulder straps to the point that it hurt. Suddenly, I picked up the ship’s TACAN (TACtical Air Navigation) and couldn’t believe what I was seeing because the carrier was 20 degrees to the right and 40 miles closer than I thought it would be. This just couldn’t be, but I wasn’t going to argue about it, except for a while I was convinced that there was something wrong with my TACAN.
