As I headed home, I was resigned to the fact that I was going to have to ditch, and was preparing myself, both mentally and physically, for that event. I tightened my shoulder straps to the point that it hurt. Suddenly, I picked up the ship’s TACAN (TACtical Air Navigation) and couldn’t believe what I was seeing because the carrier was 20 degrees to the right and 40 miles closer than I thought it would be. This just couldn’t be, but I wasn’t going to argue about it, except for a while I was convinced that there was something wrong with my TACAN.

Having suffered further damage, it never flew again.
