The investigation proceeds to Dr. Roylott's room, in which Holmes takes note of a large metal safe, a saucer of milk, and a dog lash tied in a loop. Holmes explains that when night falls he and Watson will wait outside for Helen to signal that Roylott has retired. Then they will take her place in the fateful chamber, while she goes to her own proper room, even though it is in disrepair. Clearly Holmes thinks the danger lies not outside the house, but within. Soon the signal lamp gleams, and they advance.
Watson later suggests it was admiration for her wit, nothing more, that provided the charge for Holmes's attraction. But Holmes's own words of description, uttered before any demonstration of the lady's wit, open other possibilities. -might feel, but it almost certainly expresses the degree to which he himself was personally struck. So, we have it both ways, simultaneously: she is thewoman of his life, and yet he loves her not-or at least will not admit it. This emotional tension or ambivalence is central to the pleasure of the story, and to its eccentric connection to the tradition of romance.
