The longer I'm awake, the more they arrive, the separate things, the particulars, with their hats in their hands like mendicants, like babies on the doorstep, like penniless relatives with stories so farflung and desolate I'd need a heart of stone not to listen.  This is the air that set foot in the void, and nevertheless came back, winter woven like a coat around it. These are the ashes of which our footprints are made, and the wind that gave way to the glare.  This is the white the rain would have wanted, argues the snow over Davenport Street, shaping itself into petals, into lace, into the windows of tiny cathedrals, falling slowly through the net of the streetlamp.

Or sometimes I wake with my schooled tongue.  A voice clipped and regulated, rising and falling like the boots of a mercenary, drawn deeper and deeper into the provinces, hunting the stragglers of childhood down.  For wherever hominy enters, it remains. Harmony, on the other hand, is all about leaving the body. It takes at least two, willing to make the trip. For if the spirit comes down it must be lured by music. By separate voices wound into a braid, then looped into a kind of snare, which, with eyes wide open, and for reasons of its own, the spirit steps into, every single time.
