The Robeson house was no exception. To keep it pumping out heat, coal had to be added on a regular basis. One day, apparently while she was fueling the stove, a hot coal fell on Louisa’s dress. She quickly became engulfed in flames. Paul’s mother lingered in great pain for several days before dying. The year was 1904 and Paul was not quite six years old.

Both had roommates, and neither one could afford to make new living arrangements. Paul in particular was scraping for money. Essie had a bit more and began to look for items for their first home. They soon moved into the top floor of a house with furniture purchased on the installment plan, which meant that they could pay just a small amount each month.
