The Neptune was on its way from Jeremie to Port-au-Prince. Port-au-Prince is Haiti’s largest city. It usually took 12 hours to make the 150-mile trip. 33 The ferry was very crowded. More than a thousand people squeezed onto it. The ferry also carried animals and lots of charcoal. There was a storm. The wind and waves rocked the ferry. People began to panic. Some rushed to one side of the ferry. Others crowded on the top deck. The weight of all those people was too much. The deck caved in. It crashed down onto hundreds of people below.

Now, people could not fish there. They had no other way to make a living. The oil killed birds as well as fish and shellfish. Many of these birds were rare. Workers patched up some of the underwater holes in the ship. This stopped the oil leaking out. But it did not solve the problem. A sunken ship rots away over time. The metal rusts.
