The design sub-team interacts with the planning sub-team, and with the client and the instructor. Communication and negotiation are important activities in design. We have noticed that students with technical skills gravitate toward design activity, while those with humanistic, non-technical backgrounds favor planning activity. Note that students are not assigned to be planners or designers. In fact, they are advised the opposite — to use the opportunity to acquire skills they are deficient in, but, generally speaking, students tend to play to their strengths.

We have found the LPP model useful to describe the dynamics of peer learning in a project team. Students enrolled in our classes come from diverse backgrounds. Some are trained in library and information science, business, humanities, and communication, while others have a background in engineering and computer science. Undergraduates as well as graduate students enroll in the class. Team composition, usually done by the instructor, attempts to balance skills and skill levels in the team, so that technically adept students get to work with students with other skills.
