"The caliber of the contributions in exactly and Unjust Warriors is universally excessive, and, not like such a lot edited volumes, within which the person chapters stand kind of in isolation, during this example there's non-stop cross-referencing among the authors. This e-book isn't any dry treatise yet is as a substitute what Bauman calls "a file from a battlefield," a part of the fight to discover new and enough methods of wondering the area within which we are living. instead of looking for options to what are maybe the insoluble difficulties of the trendy global, Bauman proposes that we reframe the way in which we predict approximately those difficulties. In an period of regimen trip, the place most folks flow commonly, the inherited ideals that relief our puzzling over the realm became an obstacle.

55)6 It is this conception of an ‘individual’ which has a powerful influence upon liberal social thought. It can serve to depersonalise our conception of others whom we implicitly see as clusters of abilities, qualities or capacities. This has had far-reaching effects upon our sense of equal treatment for people. It becomes easy to assume that we relate to people equally if we treat them the same regardless of the differences in their circumstances. This often underlies our sense that people are equally capable of living moral lives as long as they are left alone to do so.

2 INDIVIDUALITY, IMPARTIALITY AND EQUALITY When Kant says that ‘All respect for a person is only respect for the law’ this is easily accepted as a way of guaranteeing impartiality. We do not want to judge people according to our likes and dislikes, favouring people because we happen to like them. This is an important strain in Kant’s writings which has been historically significant in challenging social privilege and favouritism. It is part of the strength of the rationalist tradition in ethics.

This is one reason why Kant thinks it is only morality that can give us ‘dignity’. Kant would allow that John has ‘dignity’ only insofar as he does his duty, whereas we may feel that he has dignity and self-respect precisely insofar as he ignores his ‘duty’ and is true to his feelings. John’s father thinks that his dancing is just a matter of self-indulgence. Kantian morality can help his father feel John should apply himself to his studies, even if he does not want to. This is the only way he can prove himself in his father’s eyes.
