That's why you are in college, to learn something. You are in college to learn a trade, to qualify for a profession. I grant that you may just want to learn some things, and you're not thinking of preparing for a job. Fine, I was once like that. My parents, however, were thinking that it would be a good idea if I could get a job when I graduated. (You can imagine what they thought when I majored in philosophy. Well, that was all right. It prepared me to be a college professor. Did it prepare me to be a teacher?

Teaching certificates are not, however, required to teach in private primary and secondary schools. This shows that the requirement of certification for public-school teaching is partially a political matter. D. qualifies someone to teach in colleges and private primary and secondary schools without a teaching certificate. So why isn't it enough for teaching in public primary and secondary schools? D. qualifies someone to teach in college? D. is a research degree. D. dissertation is a report on new or original research or scholarship in a field.

So if some professors at university colleges neglect their undergraduate teaching, some of those at independent colleges begrudge it because they had hoped to get a job in a university where they could do research and have time to write and publish. But why can't professors at independent colleges do research, too? One reason is lack of facilities, but the main reason is that professors at independent colleges usually teach twice as many courses a semester as do professors at university colleges.
