Yet the crux for sexuality was the discovery, during the 1930s and 1940s, of the hormones associated with mammalian ovulation and reproduction: estrogen, progesterone, follicle stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone (LH).

But today, sex educators risk being far behind their audiences if they do not begin when children are quite small. Why should this be? In the last 50 years, it has become increasingly acceptable to talk about sex in print, on radio, on television, in film, the theatre, restaurants, magazines, sidewalks, offices. Children receive messages about sex from the first time they see a TV screen or page through Ladies Home Journal. ’’ ‘‘Um . . ’’2 The fictional Calvin is a precocious kid who tries to inveigle librarians into telling him about dirty words.

Then come religious books on sexuality, an immense variety, many recent, and taking as many viewpoints as one can imagine. Some are conservative, others liberal.
