Field Guide to Binoculars and Scopes Astronomical Scopes 39 Richest-Field Form A richest-field(tele)scope (RFT) is defined as one that shows the maximum number of stars within the available field of view. Originally, the RFT was intended for amateurs to see a pleasing view of the Milky Way. The size of the field of view is set by the lower limit of magnification, which is determined by the maximum size of the dark-adapted eye pupil (7 mm).

Because of the 45◦ -tilted eyepiece arrangement, access to the zenith is not compromised. It also works well with large spotting scopes in terrestrial applications. Some fork mounts are designed so that they can be used as Alt/Az mounts, or tilted back for use as an equatorial version. 4 Questar scope (see photograph on page 38) has three legs that screw into appropriately oriented holes in the base to form a conventional short tripod. The scope then functions in terrestrial applications as if on an Alt/Az mount.
