This is especially so when care, empathy and concern for the needs of others are included in the list of appropriate virtues. For virtue ethics, the focus shifts from general theories and principles to the particularities of character and dispositions or ‘virtues’. The morally right action is not the one that is in accordance with certain principles, but what the virtuous person would do in certain circumstances (Hursthouse, 1999). From this follows the importance of virtue education in all contexts, including the context of the professions.
If we also think about these questions in the context of life course theory, adulthood is associated with finding one’s professional role or identifying the main source of income generation through employment. As we have begun to identify, negotiating this in times of change, shifting personal circumstance and economic hardship has a key influence on how we enter the social work profession and its meanings to both ourselves and others.
