During the search for Osama Bin Laden, a Special Forces trooper in the mountain ranges of the tribal areas of West Afghanistan was shot at close range. Rounds from an AK-47 hit him in the chest. Only this Lazarus rose up with an M-4 still in his hand. It was something that simply had never happened in any other war. Today’s more effective body armor, which better protects the chest, heart, lungs, back, and upper abdomen, is a major part of the new survivability.
So, Life Magazine aside, I realized after a month or two at Zama that the whole war was coming to me and not just the war, but the price we were paying for that war. Out of those two years came the book 365 Days, which was nominated for The National Book Award. But back then, what I found baffling, and still today find so amazing, is that what I discovered and wrote down that was actually taking place, was during the time when we were all reading in the stateside newspapers that America was going to hell and that it was impossible to get an American teenager to act responsibly, listen to authority, to do what was asked, or for that matter to care about anyone but themselves.
Those of us with such orders were to come to his office by 1600 the next day to personally give him their decision. That was it—an extra year in the Army or Vietnam. It was a shocker to those of us who had thought we’d been spared. I had my orders to Japan, while others had orders for medical facilities and hospitals in Germany, England, Korea, Okinawa, the Middle East, and the Philippines. For all of us, it meant another year wherever we were going, but a year that would keep us safely out of the war zone.
