EARH housing is divided into seven classes and allocated according to grade (see Table 11, column 5). In most areas housing is collected into estates and there may be more than one estate per depot. At Nairobi there are several estates some distance apart, each comprising a single class of house. At Kampala the bulk of housing is at Nsambya, though this estate contains no units in classes 1 and 2. On Nsambya the houses in each class tend to be placed together, as may be seen in Figure 2 on p. xiii.

A number of welfare services are also provided of which the most important are the Railway Clubs. These are open to all railwaymen on payment of a small monthly fee and activities include film shows, meetings, lectures, dances, women's classes and sports. A bar is usually attached which is a convenient meeting place. At Nsambya and on other estates the welfare services include a nursery and a small primary school. The EARH publishes a monthly magazine, Spear, and a fortnightly newspaper, Sikio, which means ' ear' in Swahili.
